Search Engine Marketing:
Myths and Truths about submitting websites to Internet search engines

I had a sales meeting once with the partners of a Vancouver company, and we were discussing their web site. When the subject of search engine rankings came up, they told me that they knew that the key to search engine marketing and good rankings was to constantly submit your web site to search engines. They believed that if you submit your web site to a search engine frequently, for example, every week, then your entry in the search engine's database will always remain fresh and your web site will rank well. They were very convinced that this was the way to achieve good rankings, the only thing is, their web site wasn't anywhere to be found in the search engines, not even when one was searching for their company name.

There are many myths and misconceptions about submitting websites to search engines. Many Internet marketing and SEO companies offer search engine submission services as part of their campaigns. Some even go as far as say that they will submit your web site to hundreds of different search engines. Some offer manual submission, and others have elaborate programs that will endlessly bombard search engines with requests for inclusion in their databases.

So what's the truth about website submission? Is it really necessary and if so, what's the best way to do it? Is this something that should be done regularly, or is once enough? Which and how many search engines should be targeted?

To answer these questions, let's first look at the biggest players among the Internet search engines. The biggest one, of course, is Google. Currently, Google has the largest market share to the point where the word "google" - as in "why don't you google this place to find out more" - is now an accepted colloquial verb. The other two big players are Yahoo and MSN. There is also Ask.com , which is also popular among some people. next
