Spa Marketing:
How SEO can help you market your spa

In recent years, spas have grown significantly in popularity. Many people now view spas not only as a luxury that they can only afford once in a while, but as a necessity for happy and healthy living.

One of the most traditional methods to market a spa, be it a day spa or a destination spa, is through magazine, newspaper and Yellow Pages ads. However, with more and more consumers turning to the Internet to research their purchasing decisions, Internet marketing and specifically search engine optimization can definitely help spa owners reach hundreds of spa-goers and attract them as customers.

So how can SEO help market a spa? SEO, or search engine optimization, can help your web site rank in the top 10 of major search engines, such as Google, Yahoo and MSN. For example, if your spa is located in Vancouver, Canada, next time someone does a search for "spa in Vancouver", your web site will show up on the first page. Statistically people usually don't look past the first or second page of search results. So when someone searches for "Vancouver spa", you really want to be on that first page in order to increase the chances of that person becoming your customer. If you are listed as result #214 for that query, it's pretty much guaranteed that you are missing out on a lot of business.

So who would search on the Internet for a spa?

  1. Tourists
While visiting a new city, many tourists look for local spas to get pampered on their vacation. They often research those spas before arriving in the city. Not to mention destination spas where people go on vacation. Those are obvisously researched well in advance, and most of that research happens on the Internet.

  2. Locals
Unless you're dealing with a desination spa, people who live in the area where your spa is located are your primary target customers. Many people have made 'spa-going' part of their lifestyle. If they don't already have a favourite spa, maybe they are looking to try a new place. Or they couldn't get a booking at a convenient time, so they are looking for options. Or they are looking to try a new treatment or product line. Whatever their reasons, chances are they will turn to the Internet as one of the first places to look for a new spa.

  3. Media
If you've ever tried getting a press release published, you probably know how difficult it can be sometimes. What better way to get positive media exposure than having journalists, TV and radio producers come to you, instead of your chasing after them?

Being in the top 10 of major search engines will not only help you increase your visibility among customers, but also among the media.

For example, one of our spa clients was contacted by a newspaper journalist who was writing a story about how spas are not just for women anymore and that male attendace is on the rise. Other examples are producers and reporters looking for a spa for a make over show, or a place where they can send a contest winner for a getaway or a make over. If you are in the top 10, you are exposed not only to potential customers, but also to journalists and producers who can help you promote your spa in the media even more.
