Spa Marketing: Why would someone search the Internet for a spa?
Internet is very convenient. Magazines and Yellow Pages aren't always around. If you advertise in Yellow Pages in Vancouver, that edition won't be available in Toronto. Radio and TV aren't always on and again, if you place your ad on local radio, it won't be available in a different city. Internet is different because it's widely available to anyone with a computer. High-speed Internet, Wireless signals, even Internet on cell phones make it possible for consumers to find what they are looking for quickly and easily: at the office, at home, in a coffee shop, conference centre or hotel.
Internet is the same for almost every party of the world. So if someone does a search on Google.com in San Francisco for a "day spa in Vancouver", they will get exactly the same results as someone using Google.com in Ireland for that same term.
Computers and Internet are used a lot. Every office worker has a computer with Internet connection. During a lunch break, if an office worker is thinking of booking a facial or massage, where is she/he most likely to turn to first? Are they going to turn their office upside down, looking for a phone book that might have been misplaced by their co-worker, or will they go online and search for a spa, without having to leave their seat? What's more convenient? What would you do?
Statistically, more often than ever before, consumers turn to the Internetm first to research their purchasing decision. They research anything from skin care products and household appliances, to cars and houses. Think about it: what do you do when you need to buy something new? Do you go to the store and buy the first thing you see? Or do you research the products or services you are about to buy? Obviously, you won't research everything you buy, like groceries or if you need a bandage. But when you do want to research a product or service, how do you do it?
Based on the experience of our clients, consumers who research spas online generally aren't the ones that drop by for a $10 eyebrow wax on the spur of the moment and never show up at that spa again. They are the ones who are looking for gifts for their loved ones, or they are tourists and they want to be pampered on their vacation or relieve stress on their business trip, or they might be looking to book spa treatments for a bridal shower, or just book an appointment for themselves. One of our clients, Flaming June Day Spa, had a lot of high paying customers come to them as a result of online marketing. Many of those first-time customers have become repeat customers and referred other people to the spa as well.
